Eastern Flood Appeal Update - Over £1,000 raised in a week...

Your generosity has so far allowed us to supply a thousand pounds worth of materials for the devastated eastern region of Sri Lanka. Purchasing items in Colombo the local Tamil Students Union have been packing the goods with Serendip volunteers, including our Chairperson, and transporting them to the region.

Although the flood waters will eventually recede the damage will not. As much as a fifth of the country's rice crop and an estimated 80% of it in and around Batticaloa has been destroyed. A quarter of a million livestock is thought to have been lost and a similar number of acres of agricultural land. Not only is there a looming food crisis, potential disease due to polluted water and homes ruined but the region's businesses and livelihoods are now under jeopardy. The implications could last for years.

Whilst other NGO's are trying to help and Temples in the Diaspora are donating generously we can help right there right now! Every penny you give will go directly to the affected people of the region. Please go to our Just Giving site and give a little (or a lot!) now! Visit and press the donate button now!

Eastern Flood Appeal - An Emergency Appeal as Batticaloa is flooded!

Record rain fall in and around the Eastern Sri Lankan town of Batticaloa has displaced over 300,000 people and left 23 dead. Farmland has been flooded and rice fields destroyed. Thousands of those who fled the flooding are staying in camps on higher ground but even there some have been flooded. Lack of fresh water threatens disease, food supplies are short and livelihoods will be destroyed.

Government Agencies are struggling to help and the UN say that up to a million people have been affected. After suffering so much in the last few years we believe its' time the world helped these people out.We want you to donate to our 'Eastern Flood Appeal' by clicking on the donate button at We will distribute the monies raised through trusted local organisations that are helping on the ground to help their basic needs.

Christmas Launch Party... the aftermath

Thursday 10th December 2009 marked the official launch of Serendip Children's Home. The occasion was celebrated at Chingford Assembly Hall, London.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Serendip's Launch Party such a resounding success! 200+ guests and volunteers came together for an evening to raise awareness of the Sri Lankan situation and the work of Serendip. We had a fantastic evening of live entertainment with music, dancing and theatre. Guests enjoyed a lavish 3 course meal and drinks. One of the highlights of the evening was a raffle with the top prize of a Nintendo Wii won by 14 year old Samantha Pyke.

The evening kicked off with a moving performance by the Sakthi Fine Arts; 18 girls staged a dance / theatre show addressing issues currently facing the children of Sri Lanka. The hopeful message at the end - the brighter future our own charity could offer some of these children in need - was poignant in its execution. Congratulations and thank you to Anushka and her girls.

Mr. Peter Carroll, a trustee, and Ms. Rajini Iqbal, a long term supporter and advisor, gave the initial speeches bringing the audience up to speed on the situation in Sri Lanka, its development through the years and the current post-conflict issues currently facing the country. The guests enjoyed a classic Bharatanatyam dance performance by the highly accomplished Gerubaleny Gopal. Her grace, purity, tenderness, and sculpturesque poses brought the dance to life.

Ms. Trisha Selvaratnam, the Chairman of the Board, and Mrs. Josie Marshall, supporter of our charity, gave the final speeches, highlighting the achievements of Serendip to date and suggesting ways for others to help.

The evening concluded with a lively Bollywood fusion dance performance from Abyniyah Vijakumaran, Priyanka Louis Montfort and Geethu Vijayakumaran. The classic training the girls had received was clear in the quality of their routines. Thank you girls!

Finally, you can check out coverage of the event on and Facebook:

We raised over £4,000 on the night towards the construction of the children's home in Sri Lanka. Thank you again to everyone involved in making this such a wonderful evening.

Countdown to the Christmas Party - the day of our official charity launch...

We are lining up an evening of entertainment; a snapshot of Sri Lanka, home to our girls. This will include music, dance and just a little theatre.

In the spirit of Christmas and our own charitable aims, we hope to raise the profile of orphaned children in Sri Lanka and the means by which we can all help.

Here's a suggestion.... why don't you take a table of 10 - that's 10 people you REALLY want to spend time with at Christmas - 10 people you want to go for a meal with - 10 people you want to entertain. A lavish, original and engaging night out.

All proceeds will go towards the construction of the children's home.

Further details will be posted as we iron out the details.

Happy Birth Day! - A Dream Came True...

Serendip Children's Home finally came into fruition at the end of May 2009, the dreams and ambitions of Trisha Selvaratnam.

In the past 5 weeks we have achieved the following:

  • Board of 7 Trustees established in the UK
  • Executive committee of 5 established in Sri Lanka
  • Funds raised for land purchase
  • Land identified (0.4 acres in Northern Sri Lanka)
  • Sale agreed (awaiting completion)
  • Sponsorship of 25 children secured (of 50)

We still have a long way to go before we can say we're truly established including:

  • Raising funds for the building construction
  • Securing sponsorship for a further 25 children
  • Training staff to a high level of competency

Serendip Children's home would like to thank friends old and new, who are working selflessly and with admirable spirit to support us. We look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas Charity Fundraiser (details T.B.C.).
