Inclusive Learning & Development Programme

    Inclusive Learning & Development Programme

UNICEF reports that children with learning disabilities in Sri Lanka encounter significant obstacles to education, with alarmingly high dropout rates. This is particularly acute in Mullaitivu, a region devastated by civil war. Characterised by underdevelopment and widespread poverty, the region's most vulnerable residents are children with disabilities.

At Serendip, we connect children aged 3–15 with neurodevelopmental and physical disabilities, who come from impoverished backgrounds, to the vital support they need. Our centre provides specialised facilities, including calming sensory rooms designed to foster focus and a love of learning. We also offer therapeutic interventions such as yoga and dance, and essential tools, such as speech therapy equipment.

Serendip is committed to removing the barriers these children face. By offering targeted support, particularly to children from disadvantaged circumstances, we help them flourish and realise their full potential. We also recognise the crucial role of parents and provide them with therapy and a supportive community to help them navigate their child’s needs.

Over the last few years, we have sponsored professionals working in the Department of Education and Health in Sri Lanka to undertake comprehensive training in India, and they in turn train others in Sri Lanka. Additionally, we support public schools by helping them develop and maintain their special needs classes.

Since opening our doors in 2009, we have served over 500 children. Currently, there are 55 students enrolled in our programme, with a long list of children waiting to enrol as soon as we have the funds to accommodate them.

    Uninterrupted Learning and Growth
    Uninterrupted Learning and Growth

We have been able to run our centre without any disruptions to education and care received by the children enrolled in the programme. We endeavour to maintain momentum in their education to ensure progress in their development.

    Reaching More Families in Need
    Reaching More Families in Need

Each year we are able to open our doors to new students from underprivileged backgrounds, as well as special needs children enrolled in public schools. We strive to expand our services to more children who are in desperate need.

    Modernised Facilities

We function beyond basic operation. We make it a point to upgrade our facilities with the latest equipment, ensuring children with specific needs have the resources they deserve to thrive.

    Expert Care for All
    Expert Care for All

To elevate the quality of care the children and their parents receive, we hire professionally trained speech and occupational therapists. This enables us to provide the highest level of support available.

We provide the best facilities and education we can for the children enrolled in the Building Bridges programme. These children come from impoverished homes, and their families are unable to give them the education they deserve.

    Gender Equality

We have an equal number of girls and boys enrolled in our programme. We do not discriminate best on gender as we believe all children deserve a chance to reach their full potential.

We are dedicated to reducing inequalities faced by children with disabilities from impoverished homes by providing them with the best education they require to reach their full potential.

    Testimonials

I live in Vavuniya, and my child has special needs. I took my child to many places for treatment, but nothing helped. A friend told me about Serendip Children’s Home, so I started coming to Kilinochchi and staying with my mother to bring my child here. I see good changes in my child now. I plan to continue bringing my child to Serendip for another year because I believe more good changes will come.

I bring my son from Kanagarayan Kulam in Vavuniya to Serendip. Traveling with him is hard because he has special needs. But I keep bringing him, and I see changes in him. My family and I decided to stay in Kilinochchi so he can continue his treatment and education at Serendip. I believe that regular visits to Serendip will help him improve even more.

    - Kanthi

We came to Serendip from the Nuwara Eliya district, about 360 kilometers away. My child has special needs, and we are staying at a relative’s house in Vavuniya while bringing our child to Serendip. We spent a lot of money on treatment elsewhere with little success. We found Serendip through social media and now receive free treatment. After a month, we see gradual improvements, which makes us happy. We have decided to stay in Kilinochchi to continue the treatment.
